Genre Research: Action

Hey y’all! Today I will be analyzing the different aspects of the thriller genre:

Common CAMS in the genre

  • Point of view Shots-shows what the character is seeing/audience gets the same feelings
  • Wide shots- shows the overall setting/what it looks like
  • Tracking- follows the movement of the character
  • Low angle- give off weak emotions to the audience/emphasize how another character is powerful
  • Birds Eye View- character appears to look powerless/vulnerable

Common CLAMPS in the genre

  • Costumes can include anything (sometimes they use superhero/villian clothing)
  • Lighting is usually big and light
  • Makeup could be used to show bruises after an accident or make a character look more like an antagonist
  • Props are used for a plethora of things like blood or weapons

Common Editing in your genre

  • Action Match Cuts
  • cutting
  • Jumping

Common Sound in your genre

  • Non-diegetic sound
  • diegetic sound
  • Music

Example Films

  • The Gray Man directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo
  • Bullet Train directed by David Leitch
  • The Equalizer directed by Antoine Fuqua

What elements of the genre that you like and would use if this was your genre?

I would like to use the Birds Eye View, action match cuts and the music if this was my genre since these are different elements that I feel like would be cool to produce in my film.

What elements of the genre do not appeal to you, and you would not use if this was your genre.

If this was my genre, the only element that does not appeal to me are the costumes. The superhero costumes are not my favorite element and do not appeal to me. For this reason, I would not use those type of costumes if this was my genre.
