How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?
In my research blog, I stated that I want my music video to be in the genre of R&B and Hip-Hop. R&B is a musical genre that combines rhythm and blues that includes elements of pop, soul, hip hop and funk. The song I chose is called “On My Mama” by Victoria Monet and is in the genre of R&B. R&B music videos are usually composed of a type of performance, storyline, or choreography. In my music video, I included mainly choreography. Although, there was no actual storyline. I feel like my music video included the typical conventions that an R&B music video usually has since it had a lot of choreography. Additionally, I wanted my music video to be a fun-loving song. I feel like my music video makes other people, mainly ladies, want to dance. Including choreography generates entertainment and an enjoyable feeling that the audience will get from watching my music video. My music video represents mothers and their daughters. This song talks about how daughters get all these amazing aspects from their mothers. My music video does not talk about any social issues. In result, my music video shows a loving and fun relationship between a mother and daughter.
How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?
My music video is extremely fun and entertaining to watch. The context of this music video is about mothers and daughters. I feel like people would find a genuine interest in this topic because most people can relate to having a relationship with their mother. My music video shows different mother figures in my life and gives a loving feeling for the audience. The audience always wants to feel like they connect to a video when they watch it or at least relate to it. However, I know that not all the audience can relate to having a relationship with their mothers or a loving relationship with their mothers. For this reason, I feel like my music video can pull on the heartstrings of the viewers by creating an emotional feeling for them. Even knowing that my music video has fun aspects, it could convey emotional connections for the audience. Especially, when they see the emotions and the connections that the actors in the music video are trying to convey. This could make all the viewers relate in different ways. Furthermore, make the audience want to rewatch the video over and over. If this video was professionally done, I would post it on YouTube. Posting it on Tik-Tok is more ideal since I feel more people watch content on there currently. Although, the way that I filmed was mainly in landscape view. For this reason, Tik-Tok would not be able to completely capture all the shots and scenes in my music video because their videos are usually vertically viewed by the audience. This is why I would post on YouTube, so the viewers would be able to see the entire scenes and shots of my music video. Additionally, posting on YouTube would allow my videos to become connected to the website Google and be found there. Not only does YouTube allow your videos to be eventually monetized but gives you more access to marketing your videos.
How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
My original plan for this music video was to create 90s types of music videos. I wanted to include a lot of background dancers and a basketball court theme. My original story plot was to have a group of girls supporting one of their friends while talking to her crush on the basketball court. However, I learned from the start of this process that you must do everything ahead of time. I did not allow these girls and extra people that I originally wanted enough time to make space in their schedule to film for my music video. Although, the people that could come to film did not have the same free time as other people. After I figured out that my original idea could not work at all, I decided to create a whole new idea. This situation allowed me to come up with an idea on the spot and create a solution to my problem. I learned how to solve problems efficiently and quickly. I had no major problems with filming, but I did find problems with lighting in certain scenes. A lot of my lighting was natural and depended on the sun. For this reason, when the sun would not shine as much the lighting would become darker and mess up certain shots. Next time, I know that If I want to film with natural lighting, I will wait for the sun to be out before I record any scenes. Lastly, the editing process was the easiest part. I was able to get this process completed within at most three hours. I had fun throughout the editing process, and I learned new effects that I can add onto music videos that I like. I am proud of how my music video turned out. I hope everyone that views my music video will enjoy it as much as I do!
