Research Blog

Hey y'all! Today I started my research phase for the music video that is in the process of being made. I decided to observe other music videos that are similar to the genre that I want to imitate. The musical genre that I want my music video to categorized in is a mixture between R&B and Hip-Hop. One of my favorite aspects of any music video is watching the choreography. For this reason, I would love for my music video to include choreography and have a more upbeat tempo. One of the songs that I choose to observe as an example for my music video is, "I'll Be Around" by Cee-Lo, featuring Timbaland. Immediately the first few shots are close up's and the opening movement is a tracking shot. There are some low angles and eye-level angles included in throughout the entire music video. Towards the middle of the song wide shots, medium shots and low angles are being used more. The editing was really simple for this music video since it only included inserts and a action match. The ambient sound was attractively prominent since I loved the funky beat that the song has. The the main artist (character) in the music video started off with fancier clothing, props and better lighting. Throughout the music video I started seeing the extra people and the main character wear casual clothing. Also, the lighting was darker and the props were appeared to be more plain. The next song that I choose to observe is, "Solider" by Destiny's Child, featuring T.I. and Lil' Wayne. I notice with this song there are some similarities with the type of shots that they used. The opening scene alternates between medium close up shots and wide shots. Throughout the music video there was close up shots and tracking shots. I think these music directors like to include tracking shots since it helps with drawing the audience's attention and keeping it. Also, the video was recorded in eye level and low level in some shots throughout the entire video. This music video included more editing than the last music video that I observed. It included fade in's, fade out's, dissolve and a action match. The editing helped to elevate the music video since the background setting did not change at all. The ambient sound was not as funky as the prior music video but it have a groovy vibe to it. Also, the costumes in this video change as well. In the beginning, the girls costumes were more ladylike and then towards the end they had on more rugged clothing. The lighting, props and setting stayed the same throughout the entire video. The last song that I observed is, "Baby Boy" by Beyoncé, featuring Sean Paul. Initially I notice that this song alternated between extreme close up shots and wide shots in the opening scene. Towards the middle of the song it included some long shots and a tracking shot. One thing that I thought was interesting about this song was that it included a high angle which was not included in the other songs that I observed. Additionally, it had low angles and eye-level angles. The editing included a fade in for the opening scene. I thought this was interesting since the other songs did not include fade in's for the opening scenes. This song included fade outs, dissolve, and an action match. The ambient sound immediately made myself want to dance and I thought that was a good quality about it. There were multiple costumes throughout this song, the lighting was mainly dark, and the setting change a lot throughout this video. Doing this research for my music video allowed me to see all of the similarities that these music videos have and the differences as well. Well, that is it for the research phase.

Bye, Pookieees!
